Billionaire couple disagree on divorce settlement

For many people, the decision to end a marriage comes after a great deal of consideration and reflection. Once the decision is made, couples in Connecticut are often able to come to an amicable agreement regarding how to divide their assets. Unfortunately, one out-of-state billionaire couple is said to be unable to come to an agreement regarding their divorce settlement.

The couple, real estate developer Harry Macklowe and his wife, have been married for over 55 years. However, when the wife discovered that her husband had a mistress who lived just a few blocks away, she filed for divorce. Although the husband claims that he offered her $1 billion in the divorce -- approximately half of what the couple is believed to be worth -- he says that his estranged wife will not agree.

However, some people who reportedly have knowledge of the situation claim that the husband does not actually have $1 billion to give. According to reports, Macklowe experienced financial problems in 2008, forcing him to sell a prized piece of property. At that time he transferred many of the couple's marital assets -- including an apartment and several expensive pieces of art -- into his wife's name to protect them from creditors. It remains to be seen what impact that will have on the pending proceedings.

While virtually no one marries knowing that they will seek a divorce, some couples in Connecticut find that their needs and wants change over the years. For many, the decision to end a marriage is in the best interest of all involved. In such a circumstance, an attorney with experience regarding family law can help represent a person's interests in court, helping him or her fight for a fair settlement.

  • Wendy helped guide us through a very difficult and emotional process and was really able to provide an even and fair account for both parties. It's quite evident in her expertise in this area but the way she was able to make you feel safe and secure in a very insecure time goes far beyond her legal prowess. If the two parties are really willing to cooperate and collaborate, she's there to help gain the best possible solution for all involved, especially if there are children.
