Child custody: Regaining parental rights in Connecticut

There may be nothing more devastating to a parent than not being able to have a relationship with his or her child. Yet, parents going through a divorce sometimes face horrible child custody fights resulting in one losing custody of his or her kids. Connecticut parents who do lose custody of their children have some avenues to regain that custody -- with the help an an experienced lawyer.

Parents can lose their parental rights for various reasons. A judge likely ruled it is in the children's best interests to be in the care of one parent over the other. Other variables can include the incarceration of a parent, abuse, neglect, domestic violence or mental health issues. It is up to a parent who loses custody to show the court that his or her circumstances have changed. In many cases, a judge will ask a parent to conform to certain stipulations such as taking parenting classes, seeking counseling, completing an addiction program and doing repairs to the spaces children would be occupying.

Protective services may become involved in many instances either by doing home evaluations and how the parent interacts with his or her children. They may make recommendations to the court as to whether or not parental rights should be restored. Their suggestions should be based on what they believe to be in the best interests of the children.

Child custody issues and the process to regain custody are often complicated and need the guidance of a Connecticut family law attorney. Having one's parental rights terminated is a very serious matter. However, reinstatement of parental rights after termination is possible for those who have made necessary life changes and with the help of an experienced lawyer.

We Listen, We Help, We Care

  • Hi Yuliana and Attorney Prince, Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to meet with me. I really appreciated how compassionate you were while listening to my situation, even through my tears. Thank you so much for sharing such valuable information with me. I left feeling very hopeful that when the dust settles, I’ll be ok.
  • Wendy helped guide us through a very difficult and emotional process and was really able to provide an even and fair account for both parties. It's quite evident in her expertise in this area but the way she was able to make you feel safe and secure in a very insecure time goes far beyond her legal prowess. If the two parties are really willing to cooperate and collaborate, she's there to help gain the best possible solution for all involved, especially if there are children.
  • Regardless of how committed one is to the fact that divorce may be imminent and necessary, it is truly one of the most emotional and stressful situations one can experience. It can also be daunting. Wendy has a remarkable ability to cut through the noise and help you focus on the big picture while drilling down on what is most pertinent to your particular situation., they are a formidable team who work collectively with your best interests in mind.
