Helping Connecticut kids get through divorce on a positive note

Children often bear the heaviest stress when their parents split up. Divorce is neither pleasant nor easy for any family members who are involved. But there may be things Connecticut parents can do to make the transition to living life in two households easier for kids. Helping children to adjust may also help parents to do the same for themselves.

As many as 50 percent of all children under the age of 18 will be affected by divorce. So, they may be able to find camaraderie in their peers when dealing with the ramifications which may be unsettling for them. Parents can minimize the psychological impacts divorce can have on their kids by encouraging communication and allowing their children to express their feelings, whether they be anger, sadness, guilt or any other emotions.

When parents educate themselves and take informative courses on how to communicate with their kids, research shows kids do much better in dealing with change. For instance, a course called New Beginnings Program imparts parents with new, effective parenting skills that benefit their children. Such programs help parents to help their kids to deal with problems, to dream bigger dreams and to handle, if not avoid, negative experiences in life.

A family law lawyer in Connecticut may be able to provide a helping hand to clients in divorce situations. Not only will a lawyer have a handle on the laws that govern divorce, but he or she may also be in touch with other individuals who may be able to help family members, particularly children. A lawyer may be able to act as a mediator or to provide the names of others who may be able to offer advice, such as family counselors.
